open to far,
wide-mawed.
Some spring is too strong,
or a catch is too weak—
both are ways of saying
there is a force in it that cannot be restrained.
A hunger
Not to join
or to connect
but to bind and pierce.
It is not only friendship that holds things together.
When the jaws close around you
will you brag that you are first?

though you are as thin as anyone else.
